Homemade Shoebox House

What you will need for this project:
  • shoebox
  • extra scrap cardboard
  • construction paper
  • clay (optional)
  • multiple miniature boxes (optional)
  • felt (optional)
  • glue
  • magazines (must be 'damagable')
  • scissors

Part one: The House
1.  Take out the shoebox and remove the lid.
2. Cover the bottom of the box with felt, creating a carpet and an easy surface to glue the walls to.
3. Have an adult cut the scrap cardboard into various lengths (same height).  These scrap pieces will be used as walls.
4. Tape or (hot glue gun) the walls to the walls and floor of the shoebox.
5. Using magazine/newspaper/construction paper cover and decorate the walls in the box.
6. (optional) Have an adult cut windows (small square holes) in the outer walls of the shoebox.
7. For the door, have an adult use a pencil to sketch out where the door will be. Leave one of the horizontal lines uncut, so the door can swing open and shut.

Part two: Furniture
1. To make a bed, use one of the miniature boxes. Take off the lid and turn over. Use tape to hold it in its place. Have an adult cut a piece of felt around the same size as the box. Glue this piece down.
2. To make pillows, cut a one-inch by three inch piece of felt and roll. Glue the last portion of the felt to hold it in place.
3. Use any other boxes to create counters and tables to distribute around the house.
4. Using any clay, make chairs and couches and place around the house.

Part three: Decorate
1. Picture Frame: find a picture in a magazine and glue it onto construction paper creating a border. Cut the picture out with the new frame and glue it on a wall.
2. Rug: cut out a circle/oval shape piece of felt and customize your rug. Glue it onto the floor.
3. Curtains: cut out pieces of felt the width of the window and whatever length you please. glue only the top part of the curtain above the window.
4. Clay food: using colorful clay, make mini food and place on the dining table!
